Gibraltar is one of the most sporting nations in the world per head of population with 37 Sporting Associations registered with the Sports Department.

Sport & Leisure in Gibraltar

The Government of Gibraltar Ministry of Sport & Youth through the Sports Department, its Sports Development Unit and the Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council support local Sports Associations with free use of sports facilities, grants towards competing in official international competitions and sports development projects and advice on the development of individual sports.
The headquarters of the Sports Department is the Victoria Stadium, Bayside Road, Gibraltar.

Facilities
The Sports Department manages the sports facilities at the Victoria Stadium, Hargraves Court, the tennis courts at Queensway and The Mount, and also the community use of schools sports facilities, in partnership with the Department of Education & Training. Allocations are provided to sports associations to run their leagues and training sessions and recreational bookings for squash and badminton are also available throughout the year. The booking of other stadium facilities by sports associations; clubs and teams are available on a casual booking basis subject to availability throughout the year. Community Use of school facilities is allocated to sports associations, clubs and teams during school full day, term times on a seasonal basis.

The main pitch at the Victoria Stadium has just recently been resurfaced with a FIFA/UEFA approved New (Third) Generation synthetic turf and its athletics tracks with a new Bolidtan surface to IAAF specification. At present an ambitious project to expand the number and quality of the sports facilities is under construction. This is programme for completion in 2004.

Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council (GSAC)
The Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council, which is chaired by the Minister for Sport, is made up of democratically elected members of Gibraltar’s sporting community who advise the Minister on issues relating to sport. GSAC also makes recommendations on applications from Sports Associations for finance towards participation in official international competitions and sports development projects.
