Gibraltar is one of the most sporting nations in the world per head of population with 37 Sporting Associations registered with the Sports Department.

Sport & Leisure in Gibraltar

The Government of Gibraltar Ministry of Sport & Youth through the Sports Department, its Sports Development Unit and the Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council support local Sports Associations with free use of sports facilities, grants towards competing in official international competitions and sports development projects and advice on the development of individual sports.
The headquarters of the Sports Department is the Victoria Stadium, Bayside Road, Gibraltar.

Facilities
The Sports Department manages the sports facilities at the Victoria Stadium, Hargraves Court, the tennis courts at Queensway and The Mount, and also the community use of schools sports facilities, in partnership with the Department of Education & Training. Allocations are provided to sports associations to run their leagues and training sessions and recreational bookings for squash and badminton are also available throughout the year. The booking of other stadium facilities by sports associations; clubs and teams are available on a casual booking basis subject to availability throughout the year. Community Use of school facilities is allocated to sports associations, clubs and teams during school full day, term times on a seasonal basis.

The main pitch at the Victoria Stadium has just recently been resurfaced with a FIFA/UEFA approved New (Third) Generation synthetic turf and its athletics tracks with a new Bolidtan surface to IAAF specification. At present an ambitious project to expand the number and quality of the sports facilities is under construction. This is programme for completion in 2004.

Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council (GSAC)
The Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council, which is chaired by the Minister for Sport, is made up of democratically elected members of Gibraltar’s sporting community who advise the Minister on issues relating to sport. GSAC also makes recommendations on applications from Sports Associations for finance towards participation in official international competitions and sports development projects.

Sports Development Unit (SDU)
The Sports Department through its Sports Development Unit is available to advise and co-ordinate coach education programmes for coaches, volunteers and teachers. Generic training courses such as Sports Coach UK modules, Youth Sports Trust Tops Awards, SAQ and the British Sports Trust Sports Leadership Awards can be organised free of charge for sports associations if there is a minimum demand. The SDU also supports junior, senior and performance sports development initiatives on an ongoing basis. A sports reference library is also available for use by coaches and athletes.

Sports Specific Training
The Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council attaches priority to the accredited coach education of Gibraltar Sports coaches and invites applications for funding towards these courses from Sports Associations on an annual basis. Up to 50% finance towards approved training courses can be awarded.

The Sports Development Unit will support Sports Associations in the organisation of sports specific training courses.

Gibraltar Artistic Gymnastics Association (GAGA)
The GAGA runs an excellent club for beginners, juniors and squad gymnasts at Bayside school in the evenings. They have UK Gymnastics Association and South African Federation qualified coaches and take part in the Island Games competitions and organise inter-club competitions as well as providing exhibitions at many local events.

Gibraltar Amateur Athletics Association (GAAA)
The GAAAA’s is affiliated to the International Amateur Athletics Association and takes part in a variety of international athletics competitions throughout the year – juniors, adults and veterans.

There are two main clubs in Gibraltar

Gibraltar Badminton Association (GBA)
The GBA is affiliated to the IBA and the EBA and runs leagues and training programmes for adults and the secondary school age group children locally. The GBA will be developing badminton opportunities for middle school age children in the near future. Their squads compete in the Island Games amd international competitions.

Gibraltar Amateur Basketball Association (GABBA)
GABBA are affiliated to FIBA and participate in international competitions at all age groups. The have a Basketball Development Officer Randy Haefner. GABBA run extensive leagues and training for Mini, Passerelle, Cadets, seniors and Adults at a variety of levels, they also host veterans and fun tournaments and have an extensive schools development programme.

Gibraltar and Billiards & Snooker Association (GBSA)
The GBSA is a member of the IBSA and runs an excellent programme of billiards and snooker leagues and competitions at a variety of venues throughout Gibraltar; they also participate in international competitions. They are always keen to attract new members.

Gibraltar Amateur Boxing Association (GABA)
GABA is a member of IABA and has an excellent training and sparring gymnasium on Rosia Road opposite the Royal Naval Hospital. Adults and young people over the age of 13 years of age are welcome to join the association under the expert and safe tuition of ex-professional boxer Mr Ernest Victory.

Gibraltar Canoeing Association
One of Gibraltar’s newest Associations. Members are working to qualify local coaches in order to offer taster sessions to juniors and seniors. Canoeist can often be seen surfing on Catalan Bay during the winter months. The Association is keen to attract members who are interested in helping to develop the association.

Gibraltar Cricket Association (GCA)
The GCA is a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and regularly plays in international competitions at home and abroad. They run an intensive summer season of leagues and competitions at Europa Point and at the Victoria Stadium, they hold junior and senior training sessions throughout the year.

Gibraltar Cycling Association
Association members meet up to organise cycle tours of varying difficulty and distances in Spain throughout the year, they also organise an annual touring holiday for adults each year.

Gibraltar Football Association (GFA)
The GFA run an extensive programme of leagues and competitions for all age groups, the season runs from October to May. They also run a Futsal (five-a-side) league over the summer months at the Victoria Stadium.

Veteran’s Football Club

Recreational football is played for veterans (over 35’s) with weekly training and special competitions and tournaments throughout the year. All matches are played to raise money for charities.

Gibraltar Golf Union (GGU)
The GGU are members of and have a handicap system that links into the English Golf Union. They have an extensive competition programme along the Costa del Golf throughout the year. Junior coaching is also available through the GGU.

The GHA are members of FIH and EHF and play in a variety of international competitions. The game in Gibraltar is played at a very high standard with competitions and training for men, women and juniors.

Gibraltar Judo Association
UKMAF recognised instructors provide a challenging training syllabus tailored for all ages and levels. Training held at the Budokai Martial Arts Centre in Wellington Front. Classes for juniors and seniors take place during the evenings throughout the week. The Gibraltar Judo Association also runs specialised courses in the use of weapons and different martial arts techniques throughout the year.

Gibraltar Ju-jitsu Academy
Qualified instructors who undertake annual coach education with their UK based Governing Body lead all Ju-jitsu sessions. Training and gradings for juniors and seniors are held during the evening at the Ju-jitsu Academy Headquarters, 4 North umpers Bastion (Rosia Road opposite Alameda Estate).

Gibraltar Motorboat Racing Association
The Gibraltar Motorboat Association is working in conjunction with the RYA in the UK to put Gibraltar on the map as a top international venue for the sport. They organise a series of local competitions throughout the season, and are represented in official competitions and are presently concentrating on qualifying members as officials and referees.

Gibraltar Netball Association (GNA)
The GNA are affiliated to FENA & IFNA. They organise and run a very busy diary of competitions throughout the year. They also run senior and junior (years 6 to 10) leagues throughout the season.

Gibraltar Petanque Association
The Gibraltar Petanque Association plays Petanque at Giralda Gardens on Smith Dorrien Avenue. They are a relatively new association and keen to develop the sport in Gibraltar as it is an ideal activity for seniors and those not as able to participate in more physically demanding sports.

Gibraltar Pool Association (GPA)
The GPA has a home and away league that is normally played on a Thursday evening throughout the season. They are also members of the EUKPF and represent Gibraltar in international competitions abroad on a regular basis.

Gibraltar Rhythmic Gymnastics Association
The Gibraltar Rhythmics Gymnastics Association run training sessions for girls 5 years to 18 years of age in this beautiful sport, they train one week day evenings and during the school holidays. The sport encompasses floor, hoops, ribbons, batons and ball disciplines and the squads regularly participate in competition with neighbouring Spanish teams and more recently with teams from the UK. Gibraltar Rugby Football Union (GRFU)
The GRFU organise training sessions for Colts, seniors and veterans. They play in the Andalusian 2nd division league – Oct to April. The Association organises rugby tournaments for veterans and tag rugby tasters and tournaments for middle school age children throughout the season.

The Gibraltar Federation of Sea Anglers (GFSA)
GFSA are members of FIPS-M and CIPS and compete regularly to a very high standard in international competitions. The have hosted the World Shore Fishing Championships in Gibraltar in 2002 and successfully achieved first and third places in the team events. There are four local fishing clubs, two sea angling and two shore angling, and between them they have a superb calendar of fishing events and competitions.

Gibraltar Shooting Federation
The shooting Federation is made up of three shooting disciplines:

* Pistol Shooting – The Association has excellent facilities based in the South of Gibraltar close to the Royal Naval Hospital and organises an extensive programme of leagues and competitions throughout the season. All shooting disciplines take part in the Commonwealth Games and Island Games, and try to encourage informal competitions with neighbouring and foreign clubs. Adults and juniors over the age of 14 years are encouraged to ring the above contacts for further information.

Gibraltar Skating Association
The Gibraltar Skating Association in conjunction with the Gibraltar Government’s Ministry for Sport has developed a skate park at Coaling Island, Queensway for youngsters. There are now a number of different skating disciplines on offer at the park including roller hockey, aggressive and recreational skating and skateboarding. Training is available in all disciplines. The roller hockey team plays in the Andalusian B League and is always looking for new players.

Gibraltar Snorkelling & Spear Fishing Association (GSSA)
The Gibraltar Snorkelling & Spear Fishing Association practises their sport around the shores of Gibraltar on a regular basis. They welcome young people over the age of 14 years to snorkelling, and young people of the age of 16 years to Spear Fishing. (Snorkelers need their own mask, snorkel and fins and Spear Fisher’s must also have a wet suit).

Gibraltar Squash Association (GSA)
GSA is member of the WSF & the ESF. The Association runs an extensive programme of leagues and tournaments throughout the year for adults and seniors. They are also starting to participate in international competitions and offer junior and senior coaching with WSF qualified coaches. The Squash Centre has an excellent gym facility, male and female saunas and are the first centre in Gibraltar to offer Spinning Classes. Full and Gym only membership is available at the GSA.

Gibraltar Sub-Aqua Association (GSAA)
Gibraltar has superb underwater scenery; marine life and wrecks, in addition to this we have clear and warm waters that are excellent for diving. Adults and young people over the age of 14 years (with parental consent) can try taster dives and can obtain expert tuition in sub-aqua from local sports diver clubs and the professional diving schools in Gibraltar. GASA Swimming Club competes in the Andalusian swimming league and participates in international competitions; they also hold annual club competitions and championships. GASA are keen to attract volunteers who would like to become swimming teachers and are committed to providing coach and teacher education for their swimming teachers and volunteers.

Gibraltar Table Tennis Association (GTTA)

The GTTA are members of the ITTA, the association run regular coaching sessions for juniors and leagues and competitions throughout the season for juniors and seniors. The Association is committed to the coach education of their players, competes in the Straits Games and is presently looking to develop their young players towards participation in the next Island Games.

Gibraltar Taekwondo Association
The Gibraltar Taekwondo Association runs a wide variety of classes under the instruction of their qualified and committed instructors. Youngsters take their grading on a regular basis and participate in the Straits Games.

Gibraltar Tennis Association (GTA)
The GTA who are based at Sandpits Tennis Club organise an excellent junior development programme. They also offer taster courses for adults, paddle tennis and run tennis leagues and competitions in a variety of different categories and levels throughout the year.

Gibraltar Ten Pin Bowling Association (GTBA)
The GTBA are members of the FIQ and WTBA and participate in international competitions. The GTBA run several ten-pin bowling leagues at the Ultra Bowl and have over 500 members. The also organise training sessions for junior and squad members locally throughout the year.

Gibraltar Triathlon Union (GTU)
The GTU are members of the ITU and offer opportunities for athletes to train and compete locally and abroad. Members organise the annual Gibraltar triathlon, compete in competitions in neighbouring Spain, and squad members compete in international competitions abroad.

Gibraltar Volleyball Association (GVA)
The GVA are members of the World and European Volleyball Federations and participate in international competitions and the Island Games. The GVA also organises an extensive volleyball programme locally throughout the year. The winter months sees training, leagues and competitions for juniors and seniors. The summer sees the GVA providing summer taster sessions for juniors and the famous beach volleyball competition for everyone.

Gibraltar Yachting Association (GYA)
The GYA in conjunction with the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club organise an extensive competitive programme for Victory’s and Laser’s throughout the season (April to October). The GYA has also embarked on an impressive junior development programme, which sees summer sailing schools and the building of junior regattas into their annual programme.

The Scouts Organisation
The Scouts run a fantastic programme of activities for all age groups throughout Gibraltar.

The Guides Association

Girlguiding Gibraltar has an extensive network of Girlguiding groups for all ages throughout Gibraltar. They run:

* Rainbow (4 to 7 years)
* Brownies (7 to 10 years)
* Guides (10 to 14 years)
* Senior Guides (14 to 26 years)

Appropriate to each age group include crafts, Outdoor activities and camping skills, Recreational games, Environmental projects, Community Awareness projects including fundraising and outings.

Programmes include local history and places of interest, international and local charity appeals, neighbourhood involvement and development, creative and environmental work, club outings, trips abroad and social events.

Bronze, Silver and Gold Award schemes are available through schools and the youth centres. Aimed mainly at young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years. However, there are opportunities for adults to be involved as mentors, instructors and assessors.
