Education Minister Bernard Linares has made a series of presentations recently to senior citizens who have taken up the opportunity of learning about computers and the Internet. The courses have been held at Bleak House and have proven to be extremely popular. All those who completed the course were presented with certificates. Today The Gibraltar Citizens Advice Bureau will be holding a third “Information and Computer Fun Day for the Older Person” once again at Bleak House.
GCAB as the lead organisation in Gibraltar for advice and information feel that it is likely that older people who lack the skills necessary to access information via the computer are disadvantaged.
Mastering the skills to access information via the computer is an important part of daily living in this day and age.
“Older Computer Literate” volunteers from the community will explain to the participants what a computer does, and ask them what they want to learn from it?
“Participants usually request knowledge on sending e-mails to their grandchildren in university, browsing through the internet, checking flights, bus routes, weather and some want to learn how to complete bank transfers from home.” Said GCAB Manager, Pili Rodriguez.
She adds “GCAB provides an opportunity for older people to get hands on experiences of today’s Information Technology. Older people in particular are one of the groups who could derive a lot of benefit from new products and services that support personal development and independent living.”
A follow up to this ‘fun day’ is a five-week computer course run by the Education Dept. for more information on Gibraltar Citizens Advice Bureau contact 40006, fax 40281, e-mail
